A Little Fitness... Circuit Training

Here I am, last September.  I would find out that I was pregnant, to my great joy, a week later.
I am NOT one of those women who gain 20 pounds and are right back in to their jeans 4 weeks post-partum.  Oh no.  I gain about 65 pounds and have to work my (not so) little booty off to get back in shape.  My baby is now 2 months and I have 35 pounds to go.  What ever will I do?

Enter circuit training.  I love this kind of stuff.  I am a jock at heart.  Sometimes I secretly wish I could join the Army just to go to boot camp (I would want to come home after that).

So, I am going to hand myself over to Brecke, trainer extroidinaire.  Check her out:
Brecke also had a baby recently and she is already back in action.

I am going to be attending her circuit training class every Tuesday and Thursday mornings 6:00am-7:00am August 3rd until October 28th.  How will I ever wake up that early?  I can sleep when I get home, right?
So maybe you haven't had a baby for a while, or ever, but you want to get toned and burn 800 calories in one hour.  Circuit training is for you.

You should join me if you are in the Salt Lake area!  All the equipment you'll need for the class is provided. Sign up for Circuit by emailing Brecke at brecke.ure@gmail.com.  You can find more information and costs here.

Not in the area?  They have circuit training everywhere... so no excuses!  Sign up, get out there, amaze yourself.  I want to hear all about it!

A Little Music... An Apology

Several years ago I was living in Boston and dating a boy in San Francisco. Somehow all of the planets aligned one weekend and I had to be in the Bay Area for work right on his birthday. It also just so happened that one of our favorite bands was playing that night. I got tickets to the show, he rounded up a small army of our mutual friends and after my workshop, he and a buddy picked me up and we headed over to enjoy a perfect evening with a band called Low.
But before Low could start, we had to endure this really annoying opening act. There were about 15 of us in our little group and all of us were so irritated by her. Her music wasn't great, she talked too much and she played way, way longer than we thought an opening act ought. She finally finished and the boy and I finally got to the business of holding hands and swaying to the main event. It still ranks as one of my favorite nights of all time.
That opening artist was a woman named Jolie Holland and to my utter surprise, her name started popping all over the place on the lips and blogs of people I really trusted. Could it be the same woman whose set we all grumbled through? So I resisted. Because I heard her firsthand and well, you don't always have to love everyone right?
Well yesterday we sent out on a pre 4th of July adventure and my friend popped in the CD he can't stop listening to. And ladies, I stand corrected. Jolie Holland is completely wonderful. This is from her 2008 album, The Living and the Dead. And it's perfection.

A Little Health... Boogie Wipes!

Our family is recovering from the dreaded summer cold.  As any mom knows, the boogies seem to hang around for weeks after the cough and fever are gone.  Both my little girls are now suffering from crusty boogers and chapped noses.  But finally, a solution...Boogie Wipes!!

Boogie Wipes are the product of two moms and a little innovation.  They invented Boogie Wipes in 2007 as "a solution to our kids' runny, red noses."  They, like most moms, were tired of trying to use saline spray, bulb syringes, and harsh dry tissues.  And thus, Boogie Wipes were born.

Boogie Wipes are infused with saline, which helps soften the boogies.  They are super soft and just slightly damp.  They also come in some fun flavors, including Great Grape, Fresh Scent, Magic Menthol, and Simply Unscented.

So, go get some!! You and your kids will not be disappointed.  They are definitely...a little great!

A Little Crafty... The Easiest Necklace You Will Ever Make!

I love (love!) making my own jewelry.  It always makes me smile when someone compliments a piece of jewelry I am wearing and I can say, "Thanks so much, I actually made it."

Even better?  When that piece only takes about 15 minutes to make!  I've put together this little tutorial so that you can make your own!

First, gather your supplies.  You will need:
 - Two pairs of jewelry making pliers (for working with jump rings)
 - About 20 inches of beading wire
 - Jump rings
 - 2 crimp beads
 - Necklace Clasp
 - Beads (I used all the same color)

Second, string your beads onto your wire and secure with crimp beads and loops on each end.  (If you are new to beading check out this short video on how to secure crimp beads.)

Next, use jump rings to make a chain so that your necklace is adjustable.  (You could also use a piece of chain you already have on hand as long as the clasp will fit through the holes of the chain.)  Attach the chain and the clasp to the loops you created with your crimp beads.
And you're done!  A simple necklace made in minutes!

You could easily buy beads in different colors and make one necklace for every outfit you own!  I think I may make a sky blue version next.

A Little Awsome Blog... Copy Cat Chic

I love this blog!

Behold, a blog I check out at least once a week!  Reichel B., editor, combines two of her favorite hobbies: Decorating & finding a good deal. A Little History... The National Archives Website

National Archives maintains a website all about the Declaration of Independence.
You can download high resolution pictures of the engraved Declaration as well as the original hand-written Declaration.  The site also has the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.  There is also the history of the charters and their impact on the United States of America.

The Faulker murals of the signers of the Declaration and also his mural of the signers of the Constitution are also available for viewing online.  The 1938 murals have been recently restored.  They incude numbers to identify the signers.

There is also biographical information of all the Founding Fathers.
This is an incredible resource of information. Brush up on your history.  Learn something new.

You can even choose to sign The Declaration of Independence.  The program will ask if you have a color or black-and-white printer, and then let you choose your quill font: Colonist, American, or Patriot.  It will also warn you that if you sign the Declaration, you will immediately become a traitor to the king!

Find it all at the National Archives website.

A Little Music... A Truly Dreamy Song

June was a busy month and I spent far, far too much of it on an airplane. However, time alone in airports meant plenty of time to catch up on all the old podcasts stacking up on my iPod. Loads of This American Life and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. And of course, KCRW's Today's Top Tune.
I was headed to Portland when Santa Monica Dream by Angus and Julia Stone cycled through my  iTunes. Maybe I was tired, maybe it was the altitude, but I started to cry, right there on the airplane. Santa Monica was the first place I moved all myself as an adult. Something about this song takes me right back to the summer of 2002 and trying to figure out what the heck to do with my life now that I had run up to the end of all the goals my 16 year old self had set.
It's a lovely summer tune even if you have never even seen the ocean. Angus and Julia are brother and sister. Wouldn't it be fun to be in a band with your brother? Especially if you wrote such lovely things together.

A Little Health... HPV vaccination

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus transmitted through any kind of gential contact with someone who has HPV.  Many people who have HPV don’t know it, because the virus often has no signs or symptoms, which means the virus may be passed to a partner without knowing it.  HPV will affect an estimated 75% to 80% of males and females in their lifetime. For most, HPV clears on its own. But, for others who don’t clear certain types, HPV can cause genital warts in both males and females and may cause more serious problems including cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers in females.

There are dozens of types of HPV, however there are 4 types that are important to understand, because they cause the most cases of HPV-related diseases in males and females.  HPV types 6 and 11 cause about 90% of genital warts cases in females and males.  HPV types 16 and 18 cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases, 70% of vaginal cancer cases, and up to 50% of vulvar cancer cases in females.

There are currently two vaccinations on the market to prevent certain types of HPV.  They are Gardasil and Cervarix.

Gardasil is manufactured by Merck Pharmaceuticals. It has been on the market for a couple of years.  It helps protect against 4 types of HPV.  In girls and young women ages 9 to 26, Gardasil helps protect against 2 types of HPV (HPV 16 and 18) that cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases, 70% of vaginal cancer cases, and up to 50% of vulvar cancer cases; and 2 more types (HPV 6 and 11) that cause 90% of genital warts cases. In boys and young men ages 9 to 26, Gardasil helps protect against 90% of genital warts cases.

Cervarix is manufactured by GSK Pharmaceuticals.  It has just recently come on the market.  It helps protect against the 2 types of HPV.  In girls and young women ages 10 to 25, Cervarix helps protect against 2 types of HPV (HPV 16 and 18) that cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases, 70% of vaginal cancer cases, and up to 50% of vulvar cancer cases.  Cervarix is not currently approved for use in males.

Click here for more information on Gardasil and Cervarix.

Be informed!  Do you research!  And if Gardasil or Cervarix is right for you or your children, talk to your health care professional.

A Little Perspective...Dropping Out of the Female Rat Race

My first yoga class was in college nine years ago. It was at 4 p.m., during a rough relationship period (weren't they all in college?) and just in time to change how I think about myself and view other women.

The instructor said something in the third class that sent my mind into another dimension; I haven’t looked back since. She said “Do not compare yourself to your neighbor. Let go of competition.” As she said this I remember I was specifically looking at a girl in the front row who could easily touch her toes in a seated forward fold. And I wasn’t just looking. I was trying to catch up to her, I was feeling like I was somehow less because I had tight hamstrings and a short low back and she didn’t. I was losing an unseen race of self worth.

I was crazy.

Sounds silly, right? But think about it- if you are a female and walk into a gym, you are not checking out the guys. Admit it! Most of you walk in, size up the women and compare your waist size, your rear view and treadmill speed. Something inside of us feels smaller or lesser. Maybe you even count cellulite dimples. Maybe you feel something whisper “Yes!” with a pumped fist inside of you when you can out-lap the grandma in the pool. Maybe we get excited when the skinny chick gets swollen during her pregnancy or your girlfriend orders a naughty dessert and might gain weight.

We are existing alone under the control of fear.

Comparison is rooted in competition, and competition is rooted in fear. Fear that if someone is thinner, faster, younger, richer, or can touch their toes in yoga, not face-plant off of the step or avoid sweating a small version of the Great Salt Lake onto the cycle room floor- then they are better than you. They win. When they win you lose.

This is a lie. It is a convenient lie that is whispered to women everywhere to alienate, depress and stimey sisterhood, individual progress and happiness. When we can see that our self worth is inherent and divine and doesn’t have a darn thing to do with whether we can balance on one foot in tree posture then we gain power. In giving away the power of competition and deciding to live our lives in love and not fear- then we gain peace. We can serve other women freely. We can trust. We can gain real friendships. We can lead. Our physical health and abilities will exponentially expand in all directions. We’ll feel a deepening of our essence, our intelligence, and the real “us” as well as see our muscles and hearts strengthen.

Do you catch yourself comparing? Competition in the gym usually doesn’t stay inside the gym. Mental comparisons are probably running dialogues many of us have that extend to strangers in the store, to women in our families, to women at work and church...making them our enemies. Making these comparisons is based on fear, fear that we are not good enough. We ARE good enough. This imaginary race we’re running in our heads isn’t real, and it’s used against us to stop our progress. The images we see and compare ourselves to in the market place convince us the race is real and not imagined so that we’ll buy their products to win.

It is time to stop living life out of fear. It is time to stop making decisions, buying things, faking things, and having tiresome emotional reactions, based on fear. Fear makes the people around us our enemies. That chick who can touch her toes in yoga class or ran a mile on Saturday? She is not your enemy. Maybe you don’t even see it happening in your own mind process, but women tend to compare their weaknesses with the strengths of others. And it’s OK to have weaknesses- and it’s OK to have strengths. We can let ourselves and other people have strengths!

Remember that you are good enough.  No amount of exercise, clothing, jewelry, or comparison with other females is going to make you feel good enough.  Only you can make you feel good enough.  And you deserve it.

A Little Crafty... Pom Pom Hair Bands

There were quite a few pom poms left over from our necklaces, so I made pom pom hair bands. To make them you need: Pom poms, scissors, a needle, hair elastics, and stretchy cord. (You could use fishing line, but I think its difficult to tie and the stretchy cord has give, so, it doesn't seem to break.)

Thread a length of cord onto the needle and slide almost through the middle of one pom pom.
Slide the elastic band onto the cord, then another pom pom.
Pull just tight enough to sandwich the elastic cord between the pom poms and tie the ends in multiple overhand or square knots, maybe three or four.

Cut the ends of the cord so that they disappear into the pom poms, but long enough that they won't come undone.
Then use as you would any hair band.
Just make sure that you make enough to avoid early morning arguing.

A Little Cuisine... Healthy Road-Trip Treats

For the most part I love road trips......except.....the whine. Not from the car. The whine is the noise coming from the back seats and starts up about an hour into the trip. Bored kids = hungry = mad dash to the nearest Mickey D's drive-thru. I have been guilty of stashing goldfish crackers, Cheese Nips, licorice, and sodas to get the kids from Point A to Point B. Mom-guilt inevitably follows the junk food fest as I promise myself that I will do better in nutrition department on the next road trip.

I have been doing better.

How about some good and healthy snacks for your upcoming road trip? Beyond my usual juices and milk, apples, bananas, and cheese-sticks in my cooler, these require a little bit of advance planning. But it will save you headaches and guilt later when you and your family need sustenance right now. I am constantly changing the recipes and ideas. Here are my current favorites (all picture courtesy of the websites highlighted):

1.
Eating Well's Honey Almond Power Bar - Satisfying, chewy, good-for-you, and you know what's in it because you made it. Add milk and you have breakfast on the road. Especially great, since that means no dishes to wash on the morning you leave.

2. Giada's Tuna and White Bean Salad - Who doesn't love Food Network? This salad sates Mr. Wonderful's need for healthy protein, my love for fresh food, and The Love Magnet's love for all things bean. This does require refrigeration so I pack individual cup-size portions in the cooler. My boys prefer sandwiches. That's fine, I pack those, too.

3. Cheeky Kitchen's S'more's Cookies - . I lurve me some Brooke McLay. All of the recipes and photos on her blog are fab. Yes, I know they are chocolate and slightly messy for taking in the car. That's why I keep wipes in every single pocket of my minivan. Save these for after-lunch treat.

4. Cooking Light's Hummus - I think hummus dip is easier in the car, because it's less likely to fall off the dipper. I pack a bag of baby carrots, celery sticks, homemade pita chips, and red pepper slices (okay, I admit that the adults are the only ones who will eat the red pepper slices).

5. Foodie Reflections' Trail Mix - okay no rocket science here. I take my kids to the local grocery that has bulk bins and let them loose. They gravitate towards the M&M's, Cheetos, and Gummi Bears. I try to steer them towards the raw almonds, sunflower seeds, and dried fruits. My current favorite is from Foodie Reflections and includes sour cherries and chocolate.

When possible, I try to plan in advance of what town we'll be in during the lunch hour in order to get the directions to a good park. My boys get to run around and toss a football. My daughter heads straight for the slides and swings. My dog barks joyously and chases whomever will play with her. Listen to that..........ahhhhh.....no whine.
